I have come to the realization that owning a business is similar to being a student in school. What I mean by this is that there is a side to owning a business that often the public doesn’t see. This side of owning a business is spending time learning how to better yourself and how to better your business.
Most of my free time is dedicated to my business. When I’m not working with clients, or taking care of all of the office tasks that come with running a business, I am constantly learning. I spend countless hours reading any and everything that will make me a better business owner, and will help make my business better. I spend a lot of time searching the web looking at similar businesses, and reading all sorts of business articles about small businesses.
I have found that there is so much to learn from other business owners, whether they are similar to Everyday Helper or not. I have loved being able to connect with other business owners in the community and have learned a lot from them. For instance I started blogging because surprisingly it was a common feedback that I’d receive from other business owners. Now not only do I blog (not as often as I should) but I enjoy following many other business and personal blogs just to keep me thinking and to see how others think.
I spend time reading up on marketing approaches and learning how to reach more clients. A lot of this has to do with social media and for me that means exploring how to use sites such as Facebook, Twitter and so forth to engage with others. In a society revolving around technology, business owners have to stay up to speed on the latest social media trends. It’s not only learning how to use these sites to interact, it’s learning what type of content to post, when to post, etc…etc…
I will even admit that once in awhile I pull out an old textbook or look up an old assignment that I completed in college to refresh my memory. I’m even considering making time to go back to college to take a few additional courses that I feel I could benefit from. Funny how now I enjoy learning such materials when at the time I never saw myself as being a business owner so I didn’t always put the best effort into my classes.
Owning and running a business takes a lot more work than you might think. Although it takes a lot of time and dedication, if you are truly passionate about your work, it won’t even feel like work. In fact you will find yourself constantly wanting to work on growing your business and growing yourself.
I have been amazed with the growth I’ve seen in all aspects since starting Everyday Helper in August of this year and I am so excited to see what changes 2016 brings. One element that will never change though is my passion and dedication to my business, and my clients. I will continue to keep learning to improve myself and my business so that I can better serve my clients.
“Never stop learning because life never stops teaching.”
