If you feel like cleaning and organizing your home is an impossible task, you may just have clutter that is making cleaning harder than it has to be. It’s not easy to get rid of your possessions, but I’m sure we all have things in our life that don’t serve much of a purpose anymore. Clearing out some clutter can make cleaning your home easier, but it can also make you feel happier.
Check out some of our tips for clearing your clutter below. You may just find decluttering makes your life more enjoyable!
- Toss Items that are Broken or Useless – You know that power cord you have in your desk drawer? The one that you don’t know what it connects to? It might be time to move that out of your life. We all have items or objects in our homes that don’t work anymore or we don’t use them anymore. We have pens that ran out of ink, old notebooks that don’t have any more writing space, mismatched socks and power cords that don’t plug into anything. We hold on to some of these items with the idea that we will fix them or we will find the other sock that goes with the purple one that has been sitting alone in our drawer for two years.
- Make Sure Everything Has a Place – It may sound corny or cliché, but if you have a place for everything in your home it can help you cut down on clutter. Right now, for instance, you may have random objects stacked up on the desk in your office or on your kitchen table. This stuff is just cluttering up your life, and getting in the way when you are trying to do things. You may find out that you don’t need some of the stuff that is laying around and cluttering up your space. The solution is to find your objects a specific place in your home or get rid of them entirely. When you are going about organizing the items in your home, you can get rid of objects that you realize you don’t actually need. Then, you will have more space to organize the items that are important to you.
- Evaluate Your Space – Each one of us has different interests, hobbies, and things we do on a regular basis. You want your space to reflect how you like to spend your time. A great step to decluttering is to go through the rooms in your home and think about what you use each space for, then you can organize or get rid of objects based on the purpose of the room. For example, you may have a living room in your house where you mostly spend time watching TV, and you may have spent time reading in your bedroom. However, your space may not reflect what you actually use it for; you might have three bookshelves in your living room and none in your bedroom where you actually read. You might also have old video games in your living room that you don’t use at all anymore. If you evaluate your space, you may realize you can declutter by selling your old video games and moving the bookshelves to the place where you actually read.
Decluttering can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Follow these tips and come up with a decluttering system that works for you.
