Tips for Cleaning out Your Closet

Have you ever felt like your closet is a little too full and chaotic? It may be time to clean out that closet. Check out some of our tips below to guide you!

Visualize Your Ideal Outcome

This might sound like kind of a crazy first step, but if you don’t know what you want, how will you know when you get there?

Hopefully, visualizing should be the easy part of your closet cleaning process because all you have to do is sit back, relax, and picture what your freshly cleaned out closet looks like.

Maybe for your closet, you have all your shirts and sweaters neatly folded in a dresser and all pants and dresses hanging up. Maybe the left side of your closet is for dress clothes and the right side is for comfy clothes. Now, let’s visualize our shoes. Maybe they are neatly around the bottom of your closet or maybe you have some sort of shoe organizer that keeps them nice and tidy.

Have you pictured what your closet will look like? Great! Let’s move onto the next step.

Get Rid of Clothes You Don’t Wear

For a lot of us, this second step will be the key to organizing our closet. Many of us have items of clothing in our closet that we don’t wear and haven’t worn for a really long time. We hang on to these clothes for many reasons. Sometimes it is just in case we might need it, sometimes the clothing is of sentimental value, and sometimes we are hoping we will fit into that piece of clothing soon.

We all fall into these traps of keeping clothes we don’t want, but if we get rid of some of these items it will help us view our closet as a happy place instead of a messy and overwhelming place.

When you are thinking about getting rid of items in your closet, keep in mind these few tips. If you haven’t worn this item of clothing in the last 6 months it may be time to get rid of it. If you don’t think the garment of clothing is flattering on you, it is probably something you don’t want in your closet. Finally, if you don’t love it, it might be something to think about parting with.

It can be hard to get rid of clothes especially because we tell ourselves we just may need the clothing someday, but the truth is, if you don’t wear it regularly, you probably don’t need to keep it. Keep this in mind as you clean out your closet.

Come Up with a System That Works for You

The next step is coming up with a system of organization that works for you. This is something you might have to think about a bit because I can’t tell you what system you will stick with. You have to decide what is going to help you keep your closet organized.

One organizational tactic is using the cluster method. This means you cluster a handful of clothing items together that you can wear together. This helps you quickly and easily find outfit options! You can also organize your clothing by garment type meaning all pants would be together. Other options include organizing your clothing by season or by occasion (work clothes, comfy clothes, workout clothes, etc.).

The important thing to remember is to come up with a system that works for you. If you need more organizing or decluttering help, reach out to us at Everyday Helper!
